M4: Exporting Media

M4: How I exported my magazine

As you can see in the screenshots above, I decided to export my magazine as a TIFF file. For my Sheldon Cooper front cover that I created in Adobe Photoshop I clicked file, save as and placed this in a folder as a TIFF file. For my contents page that I created using Adobe InDesign I used file, export to export this as a PDF because TIFF is not an option for exporting in InDesign. In the settings for exporting the magazine contents page and double page spread, I turned compression to none so the PDF magazine is the highest quality as possible. I then opened the PDF is Adobe Photoshop, drew a white background box for the white page background on the layer underneath. I did this for both my contents page and DPS. I then exported both of them by choosing the file, export option and chose the TIFF file option.

For saving or exporting, there are lots of file types you can choose from such as JPEG, PNG, TIFF, DOC, MP3, MP4, GIFF..... These different each have their own advantages and disadvantages and they are used for different purposes. For example JPEG, PNG, TIFF are used for images or graphics usually, DOC is for documents, MP3 is for music and MP4 is for videos. There are lots of file types to use. For my It's All About Sheldon Cooper TV magazine, I have exported this as a TIFF file. TIFF files are used for high quality images or graphics, this is usually lossless compression. The file will not loose quality when saved or exported however, it will have a large file size and it will take a long time to load if placed on a website. Because magazines would be printed, TIFF is the best image file format for print quality which is ideal. I would need to export my physical magazine at 3000 DP1. This is the best quality for print. The digital version of my magazine is 720 DPI so the file size isn't too large and it will load quickly on websites (PDF files are best for this reason). I will use lossy compression for my digital magazine. This means the file size will be small and the quality will be less. Losless compression is best for my printed magazine since this will be the highest quality but a bigger file size. TIFF is loseless compression.
